Erin Stamey grew up in a small town south of Wichita Falls, Texas, as the youngest of eight children in a faith-centered family that instilled in her the values of hard work, perseverance, and teamwork. From an early age, Erin knew she wanted to be a lawyer. She structured her education and early career around that goal, ultimately earning her Bachelor of Arts degree from Texas Tech University in May 1998.
As a single mother of a nine-month-old son, Erin began law school at Texas Tech University School of Law in September 1999. Her dream of becoming a lawyer transformed into a mission—for both her and her child. She graduated with honors in May 2002 and passed the Texas Bar Exam later that year.
Erin began her legal career as a briefing attorney for the Eleventh Court of Appeals in Eastland, Texas. Though it was a rewarding experience, she felt a deep calling to become a prosecutor. That led her to serve as a misdemeanor prosecutor in Ellis County, where she discovered her passion for the courtroom and for seeking justice through trial work.
In 2005, Erin returned to the Big Country to marry Frank Stamey, whom she met at the Court of Appeals. She briefly practiced in the private sector, handling criminal defense, family law, and civil matters, but quickly realized her heart remained in public service. She returned to the Eleventh Court of Appeals in 2006 as a Staff Attorney, and in 2011, she joined the Taylor County Criminal District Attorney’s Office—where she found her professional home.
Erin rose quickly through the ranks, starting as a misdemeanor prosecutor and then becoming a felony prosecutor in the 350th District Court in Taylor County. In 2016, she was appointed as the office’s juvenile prosecutor—a role in which she created a unique and impactful focus on youth in the community. Recognizing the importance of mentorship and leadership, Erin proposed a dual role combining juvenile prosecution with being a misdemeanor chief to better train and guide young attorneys. Her success in that position led to her appointment as the office’s First Assistant Criminal District Attorney.
As First Assistant, Erin has taken on the challenge of shaping a role that had been vacant since the early 1990s. She works daily with law enforcement, judges, defense attorneys, and prosecutors to ensure the justice system operates fairly, efficiently, and with integrity. She is known for her ability to problem-solve, mentor, and lead by example. Erin has prosecuted some of the region’s most high-profile cases, including homicides, aggravated sexual assaults, human trafficking, and cold cases in collaboration with the Abilene Police Department’s new cold case unit.
Erin’s professional accomplishments are matched by her dedication to faith, family, and community. She and Frank have been married for 19 years and have four sons. They are active members of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Abilene, TX where Erin has served as an Extraordinary Eucharistic Minister, RCIA director, and youth group volunteer. She is also a member of the Big Country Child Fatality Review Board and the American Academy of Forensic Sciences, Academy Standards Board.
Looking back, Erin never imagined her journey would lead her to run for Criminal District Attorney—but she now sees it as a natural continuation of the path God laid before her. She is ready to take on this next challenge with the same dedication and integrity that have defined her entire career.
As Criminal District Attorney, Erin Stamey will work to bring justice to victims, protect the rights of all citizens, reduce recidivism through effective rehabilitation programs, and ensure the safety of every community in Taylor County.
